Wilmington Woman Stabbed Nine Times in Her Kitchen

Carol Ann Johnson, 59, was found stabbed to death inside her home in the Pine Valley neighborhood of Wilmington, North Carolina, early on July 4, 2011, hours after her live-in fiance left for an overnight shift and returned to find her body.

Christopher Munn, who had dated Johnson for about three years and had recently moved in, told police he left the house on Pine Valley Drive around 8 p.m. on July 3 for a shift at Target and came home near 3 a.m. to find her on the kitchen floor, according to WECT and WWAY. He called 911. On the recording, Munn told the dispatcher that the front door was unlocked and that Johnson's body was cold.

An autopsy attributed her death to blood loss from multiple stab wounds, WECT reported, citing the state medical examiner. The report counted nine wounds, four to the chest, four to the neck and one to the back, and found that a single neck wound or either of two chest wounds could have been fatal on its own. Defensive cuts were present on both of Johnson's hands and forearms.

Investigators reported no sign of forced entry, WWAY reported. An older purse was missing from the home and was recovered days later elsewhere in the Pine Valley neighborhood. The State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI assisted the Wilmington Police Department.

The killing was the city's fifth homicide of 2011. Police had made arrests in only two of those five at the time, and no suspect or person of interest was publicly identified in Johnson's death.

The department reassigned the case in early 2018 to Detective Robert Pearce, who said he planned to re-interview witnesses and revisit old leads, WWAY reported. Asked about Munn, Pearce said, "He's definitely probably one of the ones that was closest to Carol, but I'm not going to say he's a suspect and I'm not going to say he's been ruled out."

No arrest has been made. The Wilmington Police Department has asked anyone with information to come forward.
