Tulsa Man Dies After Holding Girl Hostage

Allen Shields died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after breaking into his ex-girlfriend's Tulsa, Oklahoma, home in April 2011 and holding her 11-year-old daughter hostage for several hours, police said.

The standoff came a little more than a year after Shields, 33, broke into the same home on Feb. 8, 2010, and waited for hours for his ex-girlfriend to return. When he attacked the woman, her 9-year-old daughter ran into a bathroom, locked the door and called 911.

Officers said Shields was booked on five felony counts, including kidnapping, burglary, assault and battery. Investigators said they found a gun, handcuffs and sleeping pills inside the house, items they said supported the allegation that Shields had planned to kill the woman.

Shields was initially released on $90,000 bond. After prosecutors filed formal charges the following day and asked for a higher amount, a new warrant was issued and he turned himself in to Tulsa police that night. A judge later revoked his bond entirely, denying a request from his attorney to lower it from $1.25 million.

Prosecutors told the court Shields had had more than 60 prior contacts with law enforcement and was a person of interest in other investigations, including the unsolved 2007 disappearance of a woman who had accused him of rape in a protective order filed weeks before she vanished. Shields eventually pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault and battery. The other four felony counts, including kidnapping and burglary, were dropped, and he was sentenced to probation with an electronic ankle monitor instead of prison time, according to court records.

In the April 2011 standoff, police said Shields released the girl unharmed. Officers negotiated with him by phone, then heard gunshots inside the home. They entered after midnight and found him dead. At the time, Shields was the key witness in a separate murder for hire case, having pleaded guilty to brokering the killing of Tulsa businessman Neal Sweeney in exchange for a deal that called for 10 years of probation and no prison time if he testified against the other men involved, including his own brother. Shields had been due in court the day of the standoff but did not appear.
