Two Maryland State Police troopers fatally shot a man after a chase on the state's lower Eastern Shore, and police said there was no indication he was carrying a gun.

Terry Diaz, 49, of Princess Anne, was shot in the head and died at the scene in Somerset County on Wednesday night, according to state police. His sport utility vehicle had become stuck in the mud in a grass median, and Diaz was still inside the vehicle when the troopers opened fire, police said.

The troopers gave Diaz verbal commands before firing, state police said. Agency spokesman Greg Shipley said there was no indication that Diaz had a firearm.

State police identified the two troopers as Trooper Ryan Watkins and Trooper First Class Carl Tyler. Both were placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting was reviewed, according to the agency.

According to initial reports, the pursuit began earlier in the evening after a 911 caller described a suspicious man behind a nursing home in the county. Diaz drove off as troopers arrived and led them on a chase that ended when his vehicle left the road and bogged down.

The surviving recording of the episode is police radio traffic from the pursuit and the trooper response, not audio of the emergency call. State police said the shooting remained under investigation.
