A 14-year-old boy in Henderson, North Carolina, fatally shot a man who broke into his family's home and then stayed on the phone with a 911 dispatcher for about 13 minutes as deputies raced to the scene, according to the Vance County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened on the morning of Dec. 29, 2011, at a house on South Lynnbank Road, deputies said. The boy and his 17-year-old sister were the only people at home when Michael Anthony Henderson Jr., 19, forced his way in through a back door and broke out the glass, according to sheriff's investigators.

On the recording of the call, later released by the sheriff's office, the boy tells the dispatcher that he has shot the intruder. "I just shot the man. He came around the corner. I shot him," he says. He also reports that he still has a round left in his shotgun. The dispatcher repeatedly tells him to put the weapon down and hold his fire until deputies arrive.

Deputies who reached the house found Henderson lying in the yard with a gunshot wound to the chest, investigators said. He was pronounced dead. The boy told the dispatcher that Henderson had pointed a handgun at him, but Sheriff Peter White said deputies recovered no weapon from the body.

Investigators said Henderson had gone to the home with three other men. Sheriff White said no charges were expected against the boy, citing North Carolina's Castle Doctrine, which took effect Dec. 1, 2011, and allows a resident to presume that an intruder intends harm whether or not a weapon is visible.

Three other men were charged in connection with the break-in, according to court records. Andrew Terry, 23, faced counts that included first-degree burglary and felony larceny. Seneca Henderson, 20, and Jatwaun Donkes Davis, 21, were each charged with felony breaking and entering, conspiracy, larceny and injury to real property. Davis was ordered held on bond in January 2012 after a judge was told of a prior breaking-and-entering conviction, and Seneca Henderson was released on bond following a February 2012 court appearance.
