A trial date has been set in the capital murder case against Paul Michael Merhige.
A Palm Beach County judge set August 8, 2011 as the day to start the trial for Merhige, who is charged with killing four members of his family on Thanksgiving Day 2009 in Jupiter.
Setting a trial date is a huge step for this case, but it didn't come without some friction.
The defense team told Judge Joseph Marx it wanted to set the trial to begin in January of 2012. The defense claimed to have a lot on their plate, and said they still have 65 depositions to take.
Prosecutors pushed for something sooner, arguing the case is not factually complex.
The judge admitted he still has a course to complete in May in order to preside over a death penalty case. He said August will work out well.
The judge also blocked out a week in July to hear motions for the case.
The trial is expected to take 3 to 5 weeks.
