San Diego police Officer Jeremy Henwood, 36, died at Scripps Mercy Hospital the morning after Dejon Marquee White, 23, shot him in the head as he sat in a marked patrol car at 45th Street and University Avenue in City Heights on the evening of Aug. 6, 2011, the San Diego County District Attorney's office said.

About 10 minutes earlier, investigators said, White walked up to a man eating dinner in his car at an In-N-Out restaurant in El Cajon and shot him with a pump shotgun, seriously wounding him, then left in a black Audi. He pulled the Audi alongside Henwood's patrol car and fired through the front passenger window.

Seconds after Henwood was shot, a woman who stopped at the car picked up his police radio and called for help herself. Her transmission went out at 5:32 p.m. "All officers, all officers, there's an officer shot," she said, according to radio traffic reviewed by KPBS. "There's an officer shot. He's still breathing." A dispatcher followed with the department's officer down code: "45th and University, 45th and University, 11-99. I don't know who that is on the air that put it out." The first officer to arrive asked for medics for "an officer down with a gunshot wound to the head near the left ear."

About 45 minutes after the shooting, a dispatcher relayed an anonymous tip from an apartment building on 48th Street, telling units a man named Dejon had said he was running because he had shot a police officer. A police helicopter pilot found White at the complex and reported over the air that he "just put a shotgun in the driver's side" of his car. Officers stopped the Audi a short time later. White reached for the shotgun and raised it, and seven officers fired, the district attorney's office said. He died at the scene.

Henwood was a four-year veteran of the department assigned to the Mid-City Division and a captain in the Marine Corps Reserve who had recently returned from a year in Afghanistan, according to the San Diego Police Department. His organs were donated. Minutes before he was shot, he had stopped at a McDonald's on Fairmount Avenue and bought cookies for a 13-year-old boy, Daveon Scott, who was short of money, an exchange recorded by the restaurant's security camera. Scott later spoke at memorial services for the officer.

Investigators said they found no motive for either shooting. White left a two-page note that did not say why or how he planned to kill himself, police said. An autopsy found no drugs in his system, and members of his family told reporters he had joined a spiritual group in the months before the shootings. District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis released a report on May 21, 2012, concluding that the seven officers who shot White acted in self-defense and bore no criminal liability.

The recording here is police radio traffic, not a phone call. It runs about an hour on the San Diego Police Department channel and carries the shooting and the response through it: the woman's broadcast from Henwood's radio, the officer down code, the request for medics, and the search that ended with White's death, which a dispatcher notes on the air with the line, "The suspect was called 11-44 at the scene. He's not being transported." Because it is a logging tape of the whole channel, unrelated calls run alongside the incident.
