A pregnant woman trapped in a smoke-filled second-floor bedroom during a March 2009 kitchen fire in Cheektowaga, N.Y., was rescued after a 911 dispatcher stayed on the line and volunteer firefighters reached her window, according to the Buffalo News.

The fire broke out around 10:15 a.m. in the kitchen of a house on Nantucket Drive West. Thick black smoke spread through the home so fast that visibility inside dropped to nearly zero.

Kylesha Monterro, who was about eight months pregnant, was cut off from the stairs and retreated to an upstairs bedroom. The dispatcher told her to open the bedroom window to get fresh air and help firefighters find her in the smoke.

Forks Fire District 3 Assistant Chief Kurt Spieler, a 12-year volunteer firefighter, reached the window and got Monterro out of the house. Spieler told the Buffalo News he knew the layout of the home because a friend lived two doors down in an identical house.

Monterro was taken to Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo for treatment. Spieler said he later learned she and her unborn child were doing well.
