A Florida corrections officer stabbed his ex-girlfriend inside her Lake Butler home on Friday, March 6, 2009, then died minutes later when his pickup crossed a highway center line and slammed into a state prison van, killing a fellow officer, authorities said.

The attack was reported about 9:38 a.m. at a mobile home on Southwest Seventh Street in Lake Butler, according to Union County sheriff's officials. Rebecca Ocker, 26, an officer at Florida State Prison, called 911 and said her ex-boyfriend had just come after her with a knife.

"My ex-boyfriend just stabbed the hell out of me," Ocker told the dispatcher, according to the recording. She said she had been cut in the head, neck and chest and had also been beaten with a baseball bat. Her 4-year-old son was in the home but was not hurt. Ocker was treated at a hospital and released.

Deputies working the stabbing learned that the pickup thought to have left the scene had crashed about three miles south of town. Donald Lee Bazzell Jr., 42, was driving south on County Road 231 when his truck moved into the oncoming lane and hit a Florida Department of Corrections van head-on, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

"For some reason the driver of the pickup truck crossed the center line and struck the van head-on," FHP Lt. Bill Leeper said. "Both drivers died at the scene." Bazzell, who was also a corrections officer, and the van's driver, Adam Michael Sanderson, 32, were killed.

Sanderson, an officer at the Reception and Medical Center, was riding with a coworker, Frederick Jackson, 41, when the van was struck. Jackson was flown to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville with serious injuries. Bazzell and Ocker both worked at Florida State Prison, officials said. No charges were possible because Bazzell died in the wreck. Sanderson's death was later recorded as a line-of-duty killing.
