A 4-year-old Port Richey girl called 911 after her father fell from the family's dock and struck his head, and Pasco County officials credited her with getting help to him quickly.

Lexi Ostrand ran into the house and dialed the number herself, according to WTSP-TV, which reported the case and published the recording. "911, police or ambulance?" the call taker asked. "My daddy is all bleeding," the girl answered.

Asked whether she knew her address, she recited it, and help was sent. Her father needed 50 stitches to close the injuries to his face, WTSP reported. Doctors treating him also found three bulging discs in his back.

The girl told the station she had learned what to do at school. "The teacher said if somebody got hurt, you got to call 911," she said.

Michelle Murphey, a teacher at Renaissance Academy, where the lesson was taught, said staff try to make a few lessons stick each year. "You teach a lot of things to your kids and you just hope that at least one thing is going to stick," Murphey said. "And, thankfully, the most important thing did stick."

Pasco County Emergency Services and the school honored the girl at an award ceremony on the academy's campus on May 26, 2010.
