Police Audio from Christopher Dorner Shootout

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies cornered fugitive former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner in a San Bernardino Mountains cabin on Feb. 12, 2013, ending a nine-day manhunt in a firefight that killed Detective Jeremiah MacKay, wounded Deputy Alex Collins and left Dorner dead inside the burning cabin.

Dorner, 33, had been fired by the Los Angeles Police Department in 2008 and was sought in three killings. Monica Quan, 28, an assistant women's basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton, and Keith Lawrence, 27, a University of Southern California public safety officer, were found shot to death in a parking structure in Irvine on Feb. 3. Quan was the daughter of a retired Los Angeles police captain who had represented Dorner at the disciplinary hearing that ended his career.

Four days later, Riverside police Officer Michael Crain, 34, was killed and his partner, Officer Andrew Tachias, was wounded when the two were ambushed while stopped at a red light. On Feb. 12 Dorner tied up a couple at a Big Bear Lake residence and drove away in their vehicle. One of them got free and called authorities.

Wardens with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife spotted Dorner on Highway 38 and exchanged gunfire with him. He abandoned the vehicle and barricaded himself inside a cabin off Seven Oaks Road, near Angelus Oaks.

MacKay, 35, and Collins were shot as deputies moved on the cabin. MacKay, a 15-year veteran of the department assigned to the Yucaipa station, was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center and pronounced dead. He left a wife, a young daughter and an infant son. Collins was hit four times and survived.

Deputies used an armored vehicle to tear down the cabin's walls, then fired pyrotechnic tear gas canisters, called burners by officers, into the structure. The cabin caught fire. "We're gonna go forward with the plan, with the burn," a deputy said over the air, according to the dispatch recordings, and a later transmission reported seven burners deployed and a fire. A single gunshot was heard from inside. The traffic drew criticism that deputies had intended to burn the cabin down. Sheriff John McMahon said afterward that they had not: "We did not intentionally burn down that cabin to get Mr. Dorner out," he said, adding that the canisters were introduced and a fire erupted.

The sheriff's department said on Feb. 15, 2013, that an autopsy found Dorner died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. On Feb. 12, 2014, San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos released a 59-page review of the confrontation that found the officers' use of force legally justified as a response to an immediate threat of death or serious injury to themselves and the public. The report also stated that Dorner was not killed by law enforcement or by the fire. Collins returned to duty in September 2013, seven months after he was shot, and was later promoted to sergeant.

The audio here is a short excerpt, about three minutes long, from the radio traffic the sheriff's department released in April 2013 in response to public records requests by news organizations. It carries dispatch and field transmissions from Feb. 12, 2013, the day of the shootout near Angelus Oaks. The full release ran far longer, roughly 13 hours of logging tape covering that day; this is a small portion of it.
