A man named John Maynard suffered an accident at a recycling plant, resulting in the loss of his leg. Recently, he shared the recording of his 911 call from that day online, demonstrating his ongoing dedication to supporting fellow amputees in adjusting to life without a limb. At the time of the accident, Maynard was 20 years old and working at the Taft Recycling Plant in Orlando, Florida, when a baler severed his leg.

The 911 call, lasting over 11 minutes, captures Maynard's urgent conversation with emergency services immediately following the incident. In the recording, he repeatedly explains his situation and location, expressing his fear of bleeding to death. "This is not a joke. I'm... gonna die. I'm gonna bleed to death I'm afraid. Please help me," he implores the dispatcher. In a state of delirium, he even requests the operator to call his mother, jokingly lamenting, "My mother is gonna... Ha Ha... I'm gonna die from this. My mother is gonna kill me." Believing he might not survive, he professes his love to the dispatchers and asks for prayers. He also remembers his stepfather, saying, "I forgot about my dad. My, my step-dad he adopted me. Please tell him I love him."

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Maynard admits, "It's pretty gruesome in here. I'm not gonna lie to you." Despite the shock and pain of losing a limb, he remarkably maintains his composure throughout the ordeal. Maynard has since kept in touch with the three individuals involved in the call, including the officer who found him, and commends their efforts in keeping him alert and responsive.

The accident occurred on July 9, 2010, during a night shift. While clearing a jam in the baling machine, it unexpectedly restarted, and the compacting ram caught his boot. Maynard recalls, "It [the baler] pulled my leg closer and closer to the teeth, until it disappeared out of sight." He describes the excruciating pain as his leg was crushed and eventually severed. After freeing himself, he made the 911 call, enduring what he describes as the "longest 16 minutes of my life" before help arrived.

Following the accident, Maynard underwent an amputation six inches below his knee and learned to walk with a prosthetic. He now engages in activities like running and rock climbing and dedicates himself to assisting others who have lost limbs. His YouTube channel, crew9t, initially started as a coping mechanism, has evolved into a platform for supporting and guiding both new and long-term amputees, as well as educating the public about amputee life.

Reflecting on his journey, Maynard notes that the accident profoundly altered his worldview and aspirations. He has since married and is committed to encouraging other amputees to persevere. "My goal now is to help encourage other amputees to continue on with their lives. Just because you lose a limb does not mean that you should lose your life. I want to show any amputees struggling with their situation that life does go on, and it can be better than you ever could have imagined,” he writes, embodying resilience and hope.
