On April 20, 2023, at about 5:02 p.m., police received a 911 call alleging that John R. Nutt, 41, of Mount Laurel, had stolen a motorcycle in Pemberton.

Officer LaQuan Jett of the Pemberton Township Police Department located a motorcycle near County Route 687 West and Davis Street. The motorcycle was being driven by an individual later identified as Mr. Nutt, with one passenger aboard. Officer Jett attempted to stop it in connection with the investigation.

The motorcycle collided with an uninvolved minivan. Mr. Nutt died in the crash. His passenger, whose identity was not released, was seriously injured, airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition, and later released. The two occupants of the minivan declined medical treatment.

A state grand jury later voted not to file criminal charges against Officer Jett.
