Officer-involved Shooting Near 2100 W. Adams
On August 12, 2022, officers monitoring POD camera number 7862W observed individuals outside a location near 2100 W. Adams with rifles, drum magazines, and handguns. Around 3 p.m., 11th District officers saw an individual holding a handgun before putting it in his back right pocket. Officers working Beats 1163A and 1162D responded in two unmarked Chicago police vehicles for an investigatory stop. At about 3:12 p.m., Officer Fernando Ruiz got out of the rear passenger side of an unmarked vehicle and approached the driver side of a Pontiac Grand Prix. The driver leaned back in his seat and appeared to reach toward the passenger side. As he turned back toward the driver side, Officer Ruiz fired one round, then 10 more rounds, striking the driver five times. Officers rendered aid and called for an ambulance. Officer Ruiz later faced allegations involving delayed body-worn camera activation and the firearm discharge. Officers Baciu, Venegas, Geary, and Alexander also faced allegations that they failed to timely activate their body-worn cameras. Watch the video of this incident here.
