Officer Fatally Shoots Man Who Reported His Wife Had a Knife
On the morning of October 4, 2021, a man and his neighbor called 911 to report a domestic incident involving an assault with a knife near 7700 South Carpenter Street. The neighbor said the man's 7-year-old son had knocked on her door and said his mother had a knife. The man told the 911 call taker that his wife had a knife to his throat. Officer Alberto Covarrubias and Sgt. Jeffery West responded to the residence. They found the 7-year-old boy outside the entrance, and he said his mother had a knife and his father told him to call 911. The officers entered the building, announced their office, and heard screaming as they went up the stairs to the apartment. Officer Covarrubias drew his firearm and went through the open apartment door. He yelled, "Oh shit, get down! Stop, stop!" and fired twice at the man, fatally striking him. Officer Covarrubias later said he saw the man with a knife and believed he was stabbing the woman. The woman was not injured. An autopsy found the man had multiple incise wounds to his arms, head, and back from a cutting instrument, along with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest, with the chest wound striking his heart.
