Off-duty Officer Shooting Near 3300 W. Irving Park Road
On December 11, 2020, off-duty Officer Kevin Bunge parked his white Jeep Grand Cherokee in front of 3326 W. Irving Park Road while listening to a podcast. A red Hyundai Elantra parked directly behind the Jeep. About 2 minutes and 45 seconds later, Bunge got out, drew his weapon, took a shooting stance, and approached the Hyundai with his firearm pointed at it. He fired once through the driver's window, striking the driver in the right index and ring fingers. As the Hyundai reversed eastbound on West Irving Park Road, Bunge fired a second time, striking the front wheel well fender. The Hyundai reversed to North Sawyer Avenue, turned north, and arrived about six minutes later at the 7-Eleven at 2800 W. Irving Park Road. The driver and passenger then exited the vehicle and entered the store. Bunge holstered his weapon, got back into his Jeep, and drove to his nearby residence. About 18 minutes after firing, he contacted emergency communications and reported that he had fired at a red Honda Civic after hearing rapid gunfire and seeing the driver point a firearm at him. During the initial police response, Bunge told Sergeant Michael Grassi that he had heard gunshots while seated in the Jeep, got out to investigate, and saw a male in a red shirt with a flattop haircut holding a firearm next to the vehicle behind him. He said the male got into the driver's seat and pointed a firearm at him, and that he fired twice toward the vehicle. No occupants of the Hyundai exited the vehicle at the shooting location. The only reported gunfire was from Bunge's weapon discharges, and there were no indications that the driver or passenger were armed with any weapons, including a firearm. Procedural violations were identified involving Officers Bunge, Davis Murillo, Michael McInerney, and Marco Leon.
