Brian Olson, 31, died in a house fire he is believed to have set during a standoff with deputies investigating him for shooting his girlfriend's adult son near North Plains, Oregon, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Olson opened fire with a rifle on James Crandall, 24, after an argument inside a home on Northwest Mountaindale Road, just outside North Plains, on March 26. The woman and her son ran to a neighbor's house and called 911.

Olson stayed inside the home and would not come out. Deputies set up a perimeter while negotiators tried to talk him into surrendering.

Around 3 p.m., a fire broke out inside the house. Deputies held firefighters back until they were sure it was safe to approach.

When crews went in after the flames were knocked down, they found Olson dead inside. The Hillsboro News-Times, citing the sheriff's office, reported investigators considered his death a suicide.

Crandall was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. His condition in the weeks that followed was not made public. The sheriff's office said Olson had been arrested twice before in Washington County, and because he died in the fire, no charges were ever filed in the shooting.
