Neighbors rescued a 67-year-old Dana Point, California, woman from a burning second floor balcony on April 2, 2014, after a bedroom fire cut off her escape route, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The fire broke out in a home in the 32900 block of Bluffside Drive before firefighters arrived at 10:44 a.m., Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said. The woman called 911 as the blaze spread, telling a dispatcher, "The bedroom is on fire. My house is going fast."

With smoke and heat building behind her and no way down through the house, she moved onto the balcony. "I can't get down," she told the dispatcher, who stayed on the line to keep her calm while neighbors looked for a way to reach her.

Neighbors grabbed a ladder, propped it against the balcony railing and helped guide her down as she told the dispatcher her hair had been singed by the heat, according to a recording of the call released by the Fire Authority.

The woman and a male roommate in his 40s were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns, fire officials said. Neither injury was considered life threatening.

Investigators estimated the fire caused 250,000 dollars in damage to the structure and another 150,000 dollars to its contents. The cause appeared to be accidental, though a final determination was still pending as crews cleared the scene.
