A 14-year-old boy fatally shot his mother and father inside their home east of Naples and then called 911, telling a dispatcher he did not know why he had done it, according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Alexander Crain reported the shooting from the family's house in Golden Gate Estates on Dec. 9, 2010, and said he had used a rifle to kill his parents, authorities said. Deputies who arrived found the teenager walking down the driveway with his hands raised and located the couple in a bedroom, according to the sheriff's office.

The victims were identified as Thomas Crain, 40, and Kelly Crain, 39. Investigators said their son was the only other person in the house.

On the recorded call, which ran about 16 minutes, Crain said he had stayed home sick from school and could not account for the shooting, according to the Naples Daily News, which reviewed the recording. "I love my parents," he said repeatedly. He told the dispatcher he was not taking any medication and had not argued with them, and he asked several times why an ambulance was taking so long to arrive.

Crain was initially charged as an adult with second-degree murder. Prosecutors later reduced the charges to two counts of manslaughter with a firearm, both first-degree felonies, court records show.

In April 2012 Crain pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 20 years and two months in prison, according to news accounts of the hearing. A motive was never publicly established. A defense attorney said the boy suffered from mental illness, while prosecutors said they found no significant psychiatric grounds to change the charges.

The sheriff's office released the 911 recording in July 2012.
