Two Lufkin men were charged with felony theft after one of them accidentally dialed 911 while the pair stole copper and aluminum wire from a construction site, police said.

Charles Alan Williamson, 30, and Kevin Dwayne Williamson, 32, were arrested early on June 27, 2012, after a dispatcher answered an open line about 12:14 a.m. and heard two men discussing a theft in progress, according to the Lufkin Police Department. The dispatcher stayed on the line, worked out the men's location from what she overheard and sent officers to the area.

Police said one of the men had unknowingly dialed the emergency number and did not realize the call had connected. During the recording the two can be heard talking about the wire and how much it might bring.

Officers stopped the men near the intersection of College Drive and South John Redditt Drive as they drove away from a construction site off Daniel McCall Drive, police said. Aluminum and copper wire taken from the site was found with them.

The recording captured the moment the pair noticed a patrol car. "Kevin, he's over there in the (expletive) turn lane," one of the men said on the audio released by the department. "He's gonna pull us over." An officer can then be heard ordering the men to raise their hands and asking whether they were armed.

Both men were booked into the Angelina County Jail on a charge of state jail felony theft, which carries a penalty of up to two years, police said. Court records showed Charles Williamson had been arrested 17 times in the county since 1998 and Kevin Williamson five times since 1999.
