On April 27, 2024, 30-year-old Mica Miller left her home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at approximately 11:38 a.m. At 12:12 p.m., surveillance video captured her entering Dick’s Pawn Shop in Myrtle Beach. She began purchasing a Sig Sauer handgun at 12:13 p.m. and left the store at approximately 12:34 p.m. with the firearm and ammunition.

Mica then drove north. Her vehicle was captured on Highway 501 near Conway at 1:06 p.m. At approximately 1:27 p.m., she stopped at 41 Grocery and Grill in Mullins, South Carolina, where surveillance showed her purchasing gas and a drink. She left at approximately 1:35 p.m. Investigators later determined that she had searched her phone for a national park and obtained directions to Lumber River State Park, roughly 33 miles—or about a 41-minute drive—from the convenience store.

At **2:54 p.m.**, Mica placed a 911 call from **Lumber River State Park in Orrum, North Carolina**, approximately 80 miles from her home in Myrtle Beach. What is particularly striking about the call is that she did not initially tell the dispatcher she was suicidal or ask for assistance. Instead, she began by asking whether 911 could **trace the location of her phone**. When asked where she was, she initially identified only that she was at a national park and explained that the location services and Find My Phone features on her phone were turned on. The dispatcher eventually identified her location as Lumber River State Park, which Mica confirmed.

Only after the dispatcher asked what was happening did Mica disclose the purpose of the call, stating, **“I’m about to kill myself and I just want my family to know where to find me.”** The dispatcher attempted to keep her engaged while confirming her precise location, but the call ended and subsequent attempts to reach Mica were unsuccessful.

The call therefore appears to have had a very specific purpose: **Mica was attempting to establish her location so that her family would be able to find her afterward.** She was not calling 911 primarily to request rescue or intervention. Her demeanor on the publicly released recording has frequently been described as notably calm and matter-of-fact, particularly given the gravity of what she was communicating.

The call triggered the search of Lumber River State Park. Deputies and park rangers located Mica’s black Honda Accord in the parking area. Inside were the handgun case, ammunition, and receipts documenting that the firearm and ammunition had been purchased earlier that same day. During the search, a fisherman approached investigators after finding a bag containing Mica’s identification near the water. He reported hearing someone crying followed by a gunshot. Mica’s body was subsequently located in the water, and the Sig Sauer handgun purchased earlier that day was recovered nearby. Authorities ultimately concluded that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and ruled the death a suicide.
