Mica Miller 911 Call Before Suicide

On April 27, 2024, 30-year-old Mica Miller left her home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at approximately 11:38 a.m. At 12:12 p.m., surveillance video captured her entering Dick’s Pawn Shop in Myrtle Beach. She began purchasing a Sig Sauer handgun at 12:13 p.m. and left the store at approximately 12:34 p.m. with the firearm and ammunition.

Mica then drove north. Her vehicle was captured on Highway 501 near Conway at 1:06 p.m. At approximately 1:27 p.m., she stopped at 41 Grocery and Grill in Mullins, South Carolina, where surveillance showed her purchasing gas and a drink. She left at approximately 1:35 p.m. Investigators later determined that she had searched her phone for a national park and obtained directions to Lumber River State Park, roughly 33 miles—or about a 41-minute drive—from the convenience store.

At **2:54 p.m.**, Mica placed a 911 call from **Lumber River State Park in Orrum, North Carolina**, approximately 80 miles from her home in Myrtle Beach. What is particularly striking about the call is that she did not initially tell the dispatcher she was suicidal or ask for assistance. Instead, she began by asking whether 911 could **trace the location of her phone**. When asked where she was, she initially identified only that she was at a national park and explained that the location services and Find My Phone features on her phone were turned on. The dispatcher eventually identified her location as Lumber River State Park, which Mica confirmed.

Only after the dispatcher asked what was happening did Mica disclose the purpose of the call, stating, **“I’m about to kill myself and I just want my family to know where to find me.”** The dispatcher attempted to keep her engaged while confirming her precise location, but the call ended and subsequent attempts to reach Mica were unsuccessful.

The call therefore appears to have had a very specific purpose: **Mica was attempting to establish her location so that her family would be able to find her afterward.** She was not calling 911 primarily to request rescue or intervention. Her demeanor on the publicly released recording has frequently been described as notably calm and matter-of-fact, particularly given the gravity of what she was communicating.

The call triggered the search of Lumber River State Park. Deputies and park rangers located Mica’s black Honda Accord in the parking area. Inside were the handgun case, ammunition, and receipts documenting that the firearm and ammunition had been purchased earlier that same day. During the search, a fisherman approached investigators after finding a bag containing Mica’s identification near the water. He reported hearing someone crying followed by a gunshot. Mica’s body was subsequently located in the water, and the Sig Sauer handgun purchased earlier that day was recovered nearby. Authorities ultimately concluded that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and ruled the death a suicide.

The 911 call is especially significant in the larger Mica Miller case because it occurred against the backdrop of her contentious separation from her husband, John-Paul Miller, and her prior allegations that he had harassed, monitored, and stalked her. Those allegations do not change the official determination regarding the manner of her death, but they are an important part of why the circumstances surrounding her final hours—and particularly the unusual nature of the 911 call—have received such intense scrutiny.

Re: Mica Miller 911 Call Before Suicide

So he was the founder and preaching to 700 followers at the solid rock church (evangelic christian) but after reading about this church and his preaching it sounds like a typical cult to me.

He used his pulpit to preach sermons explicitly telling his congregation that it was an unpardonable sin to rise up against religious leaders etc, so it's all about power and control. In this case over her as she wanted a divorce and he couldn't handle it.

The church was closed after the backlash and protests and was sold but he's still preacing to a small group of 15 to 20 loyal followers at pop-up locations around Myrtle Beach according to a new netflix doc so i have to watch that one day. He can face a max of 7 years in prison. 5 for the cyberstalking and 2 for making false statements.

He remarried a woman named Suzie Skinner in June 2025. Suzie Skinner was a follower and parishioner at his church and she is now his third wife.

Suzie worked as a physical therapist. She and her previous husband, Chris Skinner, a veteran who was paralyzed from the neck down following a car accident, moved to Myrtle Beach and began attending Miller's church together.

Miller and Suzie Skinner were having an affair while both were still married to their respective spouses. Mica allegedly told friends she had known about the tryst for a while.

In September 2021, Chris Skinner was found dead at the bottom of a community pool. The coroner ruled the cause of death as asphyxiation due to drowning.

Chris's sister claimed that in the months leading up to his death, Chris grew to dislike Miller, suspected the pastor was hitting on Suzie, and wanted to leave the church but Suzie refused and went without him.

Surveillance footage revealed that JP Miller and Mica arrived at the pool scene to meet Suzie before Chris's actual family was ever notified of his death.

Following the massive spotlight on Mica's death, authorities reopened the investigation into Chris Skinner's 2021 drowning. Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed that the investigation into his death remains open and active.

Photos surfaced showing JP Miller out at a bar with Suzie Skinner just four days after Mica's suicide. Despite the public backlash and their ongoing legal clouds, Miller and Suzie officially married in a private beach ceremony on June 1, 2025.

Today, Suzie continues to stand by Miller. She reportedly leads worship for the 15 to 20 remaining loyal followers who attend his pop-up "Mercy Church" sessions.

During his custody battles with his first wife, several prominent female members of his congregation submitted affidavits defending his character, demonstrating a history of highly dedicated female followers who historically looked past allegations against him.

Victims of these cult leaders who speak out are frequently painted by the leader as temptresses, jezebels or emotionally unstable. Mainly other women in the church will fiercely distance themselves from the victim and defend the male leader to prove that they are the good/loyal and spiritually mature women, unlike the one making the accusations so they will defend the leader at all cost.

In a high-control patriarchal system, women hold very little institutional power. To stay safe, protected, and respected, they must play by the rules established by the men in charge. Women internalize the rules of the system and use them to maximize their own security. (patriarchal bargaining) Actually it's a survival mechanism to preserve their own protection as often they have cut all ties to friends/family.

Status, influence and social standing are limited resources for women in these cults. Because of this restriction, competition between women can become incredibly fierce so when one woman is cast out or accused of being a jezebel/crazy it creates an opening for other women to elevate their own status within the church hierarchy by being the leader's fiercest defenders.

Also many women in high-control groups have experienced varying degrees of control or mistreatment themselves or they subconsciously know how fragile their safety is.

Acknowledging that the leader is a predator means accepting a terrifying reality. If it happened to her, it could happen to me and no one will protect me and to avoid facing that intense fear, they project their anxiety onto the victim. By convincing themselves that the victim brought the abuse on herself (by being unstable/unfaithful/crazy), they maintain the comforting illusion that they are safe as long as they stay good.

Men in most of these cult like groups generally do not need to engage in this specific kind of public character assassination because the system already favors them.

Leaders excel at getting the oppressed group to police itself. By getting women to attack other women, the male leader successfully deflects the blame and keeps his hands clean.

Doesn't mean these women have a low iq as often the leaders choose intelligent women by their side.

The "grooming" always start with him being charming, supportive and deeply spiritual flooding the follower with praise, affection and a profound sense of purpose aka love bombing and by the time the abusive/controlling behavior slowly creeps in, a deep emotional bond and trust have already been established.

Then gaslightning follows to make a person question their own memory, perception and sanity. If a woman notices something wrong the leader turns it back on her telling her she's being paranoid, you are emotionally unstable, you are letting the devil attack your mind and when an authority figure you trust tells you this daily, the brain eventually gets exhausted. To survive, you stop trusting your own intuition and rely entirely on the leader's version of reality. I've seen this in many docs and things i read about cults in the past.

Accepting that the leader is a fraud means accepting that her entire community will reject her, her marriage is a lie and her worldview is shattered and to protect themselves from that terrifying reality, the brain will unconsciously double down on defending the abuser just to avoid a total psychological collapse.

The more intelligent, active and helpful a woman is within the organization, the more time, money and emotional energy she has invested into it and instead of walking away when things get bad, human nature often drives people to invest even harder to prove that their original choice to trust the leader was correct. (sunk cost fallacy)

Mica however realized she needed objective proof to protect her own mind. She began keeping secret journals, recording audio of their arguments and saving screenshots of his abusive texts. She did this so that when he tried to twist reality, she could look at her files and remind herself that she is not the unstable one. He is doing this.

Miller isolated her in the community so she had to look outside his empire. She secretly reconnected with her biological family, her sisters and brother and a few trusted friends who were completely disconnected from the church. She was slowly and systematically dismantling his control over her life. She moved out of their shared home and into her own apartment, earning her own living away from the church's payroll. She filed a restraining order after discovering he was tracking her vehicle and slashing her tires.

When Miller realized his psychological hooks no longer worked, his harassment turned frantic. He cut off her access to her vehicle, cut her off financially, bombarded her digitally and weaponized her mental health history to the public. (He also shared a nude picture of her on the internet). The immense burden of this relentless, suffocating pressure is what ultimately drove her to despair.

Re: Mica Miller 911 Call Before Suicide

Definitely recommend the netflix special (3 parts). Cults are fucked up, it's so sad how otherwise intelligent people fall into them (or religion generally), even in these supposed modern times. Guess some people love and need to be lied to (which IMHO is also why we have MAGA, but I digress). If she killed herself, it was suicide by coercion/browbeating. Though last-day actions and movements (like buying a handgun within 15 minutes of asking to see one, way to go fucking south carolina) seem to indicate a suicide, it also doesn't sound quite like how her voice had become, on that recording (enough that SOMEone should've thought to compare it digitally to Skinner, I'd say). Her hubby had forced her to take testosterone injections to keep up with his 4-5x/day sexual demands. My thought is that somehow he hired a homeless person to lure/follow her out there (like he'd paid homeless people to come do sexual stuff to her/with them), and somehow kill her or force her to kill herself. A lot is missing from the netflix special, though, like GSR status, why bullet casings were found pretty far from the body, her husband's phone and movement logs leading up to things (to be fair he seems to have been 100 miles away at point-of-pop), etc. The charges he's up on are a tiny, infuriating joke compared to what she apparently went through over the years.
