Man Buys Rifle, Kills Estranged Wife and Her Friend
A Sylva, North Carolina, man shot and killed his estranged wife and her friend in May 2011, hours after she obtained a court order meant to protect her from him, according to court records and reporting by The Sylva Herald. Matthew Wayne Moore, 23, killed Melody Conger, 20, and Kevin Frady, 25, on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Moore's home in the Sunrise Park community in Sylva, in Jackson County, records show. Conger was Moore's estranged wife and the mother of his infant daughter. Conger had gone to court that morning and secured a domestic violence protective order granting her custody of the couple's 4-month-old daughter and directing Moore to stay away from her, according to the filing. She sought the order after a dispute days earlier in a Walmart parking lot, where, she wrote, Moore grabbed her wrist and bent it back "until it popped" while the baby was present. With the order in hand, Conger went to Moore's residence to collect the child's belongings, accompanied by Frady, according to The Sylva Herald. Moore drove to a Sylva pawn shop, bought a .40-caliber Hi-Point rifle and ammunition, then returned and opened fire, the newspaper reported. The couple's daughter was later found unharmed in a car outside the home. A call reporting the shootings reached Jackson County dispatch about 1:15 p.m., according to search warrants filed in the case, which identified the caller as Frady's brother. Deputies charged Moore with two counts of first-degree murder, and prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty. Moore accepted a plea agreement on Oct. 31, 2013, admitting responsibility for both killings and pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, The Sylva Herald reported. A judge sentenced him to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. It was the last murder in Sylva for more than a decade, according to the newspaper. The audio attached to this thread is the emergency-call recording released from the incident.
