The case against a man accused of killing his daughter's boyfriend is moving forward in court.
Bill Cox is accused of shooting Ryan Abner.
Cox was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing in Whitley County on Wednesday morning, but there was no hearing and the case was sent directly to the grand jury.
Families of both Ryan Abner and Bill Cox were in the Whitley County District Courtroom.
"I am trying to keep going and keep the family together. We all love Ryan. I have to have faith in the justice system, and I do," said Velma Abner, Ryan Abner's mother.
21 year old Ryan Abner was dating Cox's 15 year old daughter. Velma Abner says the couple had a baby together.
On August 20th, Corbin Police say Cox shot Abner several times outside the home they shared on Forest Circle Drive.
"Mr. Cox is a good man, and there is a lot more to this situation that has been in the media thus far," said David Hoskins, Cox's defense attorney.
Cox did not appear in court. His defense attorney waived the preliminary hearing and sent the case to the grand jury.
Cox's family told WYMT they support him but did not want to talk on camera.
In the 911 call after the shooting, Cox admitted to dispatchers he killed Abner and claimed it was because Abner was abusing his daughter.
"There has never been an issue of abuse and I just wish they would get this straight and quit making Ryan out to be something that he's not. He's just an innocent child, and he was murdered, and he didn't deserve to be killed," said Velma Abner.
"It's a tragedy for both families and a sad thing that it happened, but I think we'll see a lot more about this as we proceed in the court case," said Hoskins.
Cox has pleaded not guilty to murder and wanton endangerment charges. His bond is set at $250,000 cash.
Bill Cox's 15 year old daughter was not in the courtroom on Wednesday.
