Teshawn Rogers, 27, of Jersey City, died after an encounter with Jersey City Police Department Street Crimes Unit officers shortly after 1 a.m. on October 21, 2025.

The Street Crimes Unit uses plainclothes officers and unmarked vehicles. Officers encountered Rogers near Bergen and Virginia avenues. As Rogers walked northbound on Bergen Avenue, two officers in an unmarked vehicle pulled to the side of the road ahead of him.

Rogers immediately discharged a firearm and ran southbound. The officers in the first vehicle did not fire.

A separate police vehicle with additional Street Crimes Unit members pulled to the side of the road as Rogers ran southbound. Officer Lance Jackson got out from the passenger side and fired, striking Rogers.

Emergency medical aid was provided before Rogers was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 1:44 a.m. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
