A haul-truck driver opened fire on co-workers during a pre-dawn safety meeting at a cement quarry near Cupertino, California, on Oct. 5, 2011, killing three men and wounding six others before fleeing and setting off a two-day manhunt, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The gunman was identified as Shareef Allman, 47, of San Jose, who worked at the Lehigh Southwest Cement plant at the Permanente Quarry. Investigators said Allman argued with colleagues inside a trailer where the roughly 4 a.m. meeting was held, walked out, returned armed with a rifle and a handgun, and began shooting.

The three men killed were Mark Munoz, 59; John Vallejos, 51; and Manuel Pinon, 48, authorities said. Two died at the scene and the third at a hospital. Six other workers were wounded.

After leaving the plant, Allman tried to take a woman's car at gunpoint in a Hewlett-Packard parking lot a few miles away, near Homestead Road and Tantau Avenue, deputies said. When she resisted, he shot her once. Her wounds were not considered life-threatening, and she survived.

Recordings of the emergency calls, released by the Sheriff's Office on Oct. 20, captured the panic inside the plant. Investigators said four calls came in within about 10 minutes, beginning at 4:27 a.m., two from the control room and two from the office where the shooting happened. "There's blood all over," one caller told a dispatcher, according to the recordings. "Have you ever seen a massacre? That's what it looks like." Another said that during the safety meeting "one guy went postal" before walking back in with a gun.

The search for Allman ended the next morning, Oct. 6, when three deputies on patrol spotted a man matching his description crouched behind a vehicle in a Sunnyvale driveway, the Sheriff's Office said. The deputies opened fire after the man displayed a weapon in a threatening manner. Allman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner later concluded that Allman died of a self-inflicted contact gunshot wound to the head rather than from the deputies' rounds. Allman, who also hosted a public-access television program in San Jose, had a record that included a domestic-violence restraining order sought by a former wife in the 1990s, according to news accounts.
