A 19-year-old package handler armed with a shotgun wounded six people inside a FedEx Ground sorting facility in Kennesaw, Georgia, before dawn on April 29, 2014, then killed himself, authorities said.

Cobb County police identified the gunman as Geddy L. Kramer of Acworth, a recent North Cobb High School graduate who worked at the plant. Just before 6 a.m., police said, Kramer drove his maroon Honda up to the facility's security gate, got out and shot the officer manning it at point-blank range, then walked inside and shot five more workers.

The wounded security guard, Christopher Sparkman, was struck in the abdomen but managed to call 911, one of several people at the plant who reached dispatchers as the shooting unfolded. Sparkman's call is part of the recording archived here.

Investigators said Kramer brought a 12-gauge shotgun, roughly 50 rounds and four crude incendiary devices resembling Molotov cocktails that did not detonate. Police said the gun was loaded with a mix of birdshot and heavier buckshot rather than slugs, which they believe is a reason none of the victims died. Two of the six were listed in critical condition.

Kramer was found dead inside the building of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers recovered handwritten notes he left behind, and in pages released by Cobb County police the following month, he wrote that he was "not sad or sorry for the misery I've caused" and called himself "a sociopath" who wanted "to hurt people."

Kramer attributed the attack to "mental instability, depression, frustration, sexual isolation" and said it was "not anyone's fault but mine." Because he died at the scene, no charges were filed. Sparkman, shot at close range, faced a long series of operations to repair his injuries, and workers wounded in the attack later sued FedEx and its security contractor.
