Ex-Patient Kills Reno Urologist Over Vasectomy

A man armed with a 12-gauge shotgun walked into a urology practice on the Renown Regional Medical Center campus in Reno on Dec. 17, 2013, and opened fire, killing a physician and wounding two other people before turning a gun on himself, police said.

The gunman, identified by the Reno Police Department as 51-year-old Alan Oliver Frazier, entered the Urology of Nevada office on the third floor of the Center for Advanced Medicine building shortly after 2 p.m. and stated he was looking for the doctors, not patients, according to the department's account.

Frazier shot and killed Dr. Charles Garo Gholdoian, the 46-year-old urologist who served as president of the practice, striking him in a hallway. Dr. Christine Lajeunesse, a colleague, was shot at a nurse's station and critically wounded. A third victim, 20-year-old Shawntae Spears, who was in the office at the time, was hit in the torso by an errant round. Both survived.

As the shooting unfolded, several people called 911 and reached Reno police dispatchers, whose recordings captured the confusion inside the building. Investigators said Frazier fired four shotgun rounds in all, then walked to the reception area and killed himself with a shot to the head. He was carrying additional firearms.

Police said Frazier had been a patient of the practice and blamed a 2010 vasectomy for wrecking his health. In an eight-page document found at his home, he described himself as a martyr for men with botched vasectomies and wrote that "no other forum of communication will work." Medical experts later questioned whether the procedure could have caused the symptoms he described.

In a report of more than 1,000 pages released in December 2014, the department concluded that Frazier had planned the attack as his final act and acted alone. Investigators said he had shown signs of depression that went untreated, and police cited the findings to stress the importance of mental health care.
