Colorado Stalker Kills Ex, Dies in Chicago

Amber Kathleen Cremeens, 34, was shot to death inside her car on Feb. 17, 2009, after Wheat Ridge police said her stalker ex-boyfriend, Tyler James Martin, 36, forced her off a Wheat Ridge road while her current boyfriend relayed the chase to a 911 dispatcher.

Cremeens was driving home from a health club that night when Martin began following her. She called her boyfriend, identified in the 911 recording only as Alex, who dialed 911. "He will not leave her alone," the boyfriend told the dispatcher.

Police said Martin pulled alongside Cremeens and ran her Dodge Caliber off the road into a chain-link fence at about 9:56 p.m. A witness reported seeing a man get out of a dark sedan and fire several shots at close range into the car. Cremeens was heard screaming on the 911 call before the line went dead. Officers were dispatched and arrived to find her fatally shot inside the vehicle.

Investigators said Martin, who had been in a relationship with Cremeens for roughly eight years, had stalked her in the weeks before the killing. A search warrant showed he knew her daily routine. Cremeens had recently moved to a secret apartment and put her bills in her boyfriend's name to conceal where she was living, police said.

Martin fled the state. Wheat Ridge police charged him with first-degree murder and issued an alert, expanding the search to Illinois and Missouri, where he had ties. On the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 20, Chicago officers spotted his vehicle in the Logan Square neighborhood and tried to stop him.

Chicago police said Martin ran and discarded a weapon, then barricaded himself in the vestibule of an apartment building near Kimball and Fullerton avenues where a relative lived. At least 30 squad cars responded. After a standoff of nearly three hours and several failed attempts to reach him, Martin shot and killed himself, roughly 1,010 miles from where Cremeens died. Wheat Ridge police spokeswoman Lisa Stigall said Martin was alone in the building when he took his own life.
