Cleveland Father Convicted in Infant Daughter's Death

A Cleveland father who called 911 for help reviving his 2-month-old daughter was later convicted of beating her to death, according to court records and news reports.

Brandon Moss dialed 911 late on the night of April 9, 2014, from an apartment on Carson Avenue and told a dispatcher his daughter, Renee, was unresponsive. The dispatcher walked him through CPR while paramedics rushed to the home, arriving about 11:40 p.m., according to WKYC and the Washington Times.

The infant was pronounced dead the next day. The Cuyahoga County medical examiner ruled she died of blunt force trauma to her head and body, prosecutors said. Court filings cited in news coverage described medical evidence of "prolonged abuse."

Investigators charged both parents. Moss and the child's mother, LaQuonda R. Johns of Cleveland, were each indicted on aggravated murder counts, according to the Cuyahoga County prosecutor's office.

Moss pleaded guilty to murder and child endangering. Common Pleas Judge Nancy McDonnell sentenced him on Dec. 1, 2014, to 15 years to life in prison. State corrections records list him at Trumbull Correctional Institution with parole eligibility in November 2029.

Johns pleaded guilty in March 2015 to involuntary manslaughter and endangering children. McDonnell sentenced her on May 7, 2015, to three years in prison, according to news reports.
