A first-year elementary school teacher was stabbed to death early on Feb. 4, 2012, after he stepped in to stop a knife attack inside a crowded bar in downtown Naperville, Illinois, according to prosecutors and court testimony. Shaun Wild, 24, was killed at Frankie's Blue Room on West Chicago Avenue when he moved to block another patron who had already stabbed one of Wild's friends.

Police were called to the bar just before 1 a.m. on reports of multiple stabbing victims, authorities said. Officers found three wounded men and arrested Daniel Olaska, 27, of Naperville, as he tried to flee down a stairwell, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Prosecutors said Olaska had been drinking and grew angry after a woman rejected him, then got into a confrontation near the dance floor with William Hayes, a North Central College football player. Olaska stabbed Hayes in the chest, prosecutors said, and stabbed Wild once through the heart when Wild tried to keep him from leaving. A bouncer, Rafael Castenada, was cut on the arm as staff struggled to take the knife away.

Wild had grown up in Wisconsin and kicked and punted for the North Central Cardinals from 2008 to 2010 before taking a job teaching second grade at Spring Brook Elementary School in Naperville, according to news accounts. Hayes and Castenada survived their wounds.

Several patrons called 911 as the fight spread toward the exits, and authorities later released recordings of those calls. One of them is included with this post.

A DuPage County jury convicted Olaska of first-degree murder on March 11, 2015, after a seven-day trial and roughly six hours of deliberations, according to news reports. Jurors acquitted him of two counts of attempted murder tied to the wounding of Hayes and Castenada, weighing prosecutors' claim that Olaska acted in anger against a defense argument that he acted in self-defense.

On May 20, 2015, a judge sentenced Olaska to 43 years in prison. He received 40 years for the murder, which he must serve in full under Illinois law, and a consecutive three-year term for unlawful use of a weapon.
