A suburban Chicago woman was carrying groceries into her house when a stranger climbed into her running SUV and drove off with her 5-year-old asleep in the back seat, setting off a two-hour Amber Alert search that ended with the boy found unharmed, according to Park Ridge police.

The carjacking happened about 12:20 p.m. on Feb. 20, 2014, in the 1700 block of Good Avenue in Park Ridge, police said. The mother had left the white Audi Q5 unlocked and running as she moved packages from the vehicle to her home. Her son was strapped into a safety seat in the back.

A witness saw a man get into the SUV and pull away and called 911 with a description of the car and the driver, according to police accounts. The recording of that call was later made public. The boy's mother, who was pregnant, tried to stop the vehicle and was pushed aside as it sped off, the Evanston Patch reported. Park Ridge police contacted the Illinois State Police, and an Amber Alert was issued.

About two hours later, a Skokie resident who had seen the alert spotted the Audi parked in an alley in nearby Skokie, near Oakton Street and Laramie Avenue, and called police, authorities said. Officers found the 5-year-old alone in the vehicle and unhurt.

Investigators identified a suspect using the vehicle owner's account and surveillance video from a nearby storage facility, police said. The footage showed the driver stopping to ask for a garbage bag because it was raining, and detectives believed he later took a bus to his home in Evanston, a few miles from where the car was abandoned.

Two days after the carjacking, police charged Deangelo Fountain, 18, of Evanston, with aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated kidnapping and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. Fountain, a student at a private high school in Arlington Heights, gave police a signed statement about the case, authorities said. A Cook County judge ordered him held without bail.
