Manning Isiah Milligan, 19, was charged with murder after Charleston County sheriff's deputies said he shot Earl Lamar Campbell, a 33-year-old Awendaw man, during a fight on Seewee Road late one Monday night in September 2014.

Deputies responding to a 911 call were sent to 5449 Seewee Road around 10:43 p.m. and found Campbell shot to death in a dirt road off Seewee Road, according to arrest records and news accounts from the time. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office said in charging documents that deputies followed a trail of blood from a pickup truck to Campbell's body in the road.

A woman calling 911 from the scene reported a man was unconscious in the roadway, but gave the dispatcher little information as he tried to determine what had happened. According to the affidavits, a resident of the address had gone inside around 9 p.m., leaving Campbell outside with Gerald Reed Jr. and Donald Capers Jr.

Reed and Campbell got into a brief physical fight, and investigators said Milligan, who also lived on Seewee Road, pulled out a .40-caliber pistol and fired four shots at Campbell, including two as Campbell tried to run away. The sheriff's office said Milligan ran to his own home afterward and hid the gun inside an old appliance, where deputies later recovered it.

After being read his rights, Milligan first denied knowing anything about the shooting, then gave a confession within a few minutes of questioning, according to the affidavits. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and held without bond at the Charleston County jail. South Carolina law does not allow a magistrate to set bail on a murder charge.

Relatives of both men attended Milligan's bond hearing that Wednesday. Campbell's father, Lawrence Campbell of Columbia, called the shooting "a senseless killing" and said his son, a father of two who worked as a landscaper and a cook, would not get the chance to raise his children. Milligan's mother, Cheryl Whiteside of Awendaw, told the court she could not excuse her son's actions but said the two families had known each other for years and that she grieved for Campbell's mother as well.

Public records reviewed afterward did not show a final disposition in the case against Milligan.
