A woman and her 17-year-old nephew delivering The Grand Rapids Press drowned before dawn on June 8, 2008, when a rural road in Allegan County, Michigan, gave way beneath their car and dropped them into a ravine that floodwaters had torn through the pavement overnight.

Clarissa Green, 51, and Dean Taylor, 17, were found the next morning in their submerged car on Lakeshore Drive in Saugatuck Township, according to the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids, which documented the storm's deaths. Their bodies were recovered about 8 a.m.

Green's son-in-law called 911 to report that the pair had gone into the water, and he grew frustrated with the call-taker's response as he tried to get rescuers to the scene, according to the recording of the call.

The two were caught in flash flooding that raced across western Michigan overnight from June 7 into June 8. The Holland-to-Saugatuck area was hit hardest, with as much as 5 inches of rain in six hours, the weather service said. Several Allegan County roads were washed out in the dark, when missing pavement and fast-moving water were nearly impossible to see.

The storms killed at least eight people across Michigan and led Gov. Jennifer Granholm to declare a state of emergency in Allegan County. Two rounds of severe thunderstorms within 24 hours also spun up tornadoes and knocked down trees elsewhere in the state, according to the weather service.
