A Silent 911 Call From Barr Street

A man fatally shot his wife outside their home north of Oviedo and then killed himself while the couple's 14-year-old son was inside the house and on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies were sent to a house on Barr Street, in the rural Geneva area north of Oviedo, about 4 p.m. after someone dialed 911 but said nothing, according to the sheriff's office. When a dispatcher called the number back, the couple's teenage son answered and said his father was shooting his mother in the front yard. The boy told the dispatcher he was moving to the back of the house as they spoke.

The couple were identified through public records as the owners of the home, Darryl Brooks, 44, and Peggy Brooks, 45. Investigators found the two of them about 15 feet apart, with a gun next to Darryl Brooks, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Dennis Lemma said.

The Brookses had been married for nearly 22 years and had no reported history of domestic violence, Lemma said. He said nothing inside the house pointed to a confrontation before the shooting. 'Completely unexpected,' Lemma said. 'Terrible tragedy.'

Neighbors described the couple as friendly and said they had never seen the two argue. One neighbor, Doug O'Brien, called them 'great neighbors.'

Investigators, child-protection workers and victim advocates met with the teenager after the shooting, the sheriff's office said. Because the man who fired the shots was dead, no charges were filed, and detectives classified the case as a murder-suicide.
