Two people burglarizing a car in Daytona Beach were arrested before dawn on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, after a cell phone in one of their pockets accidentally dialed 911 and let dispatchers listen to the break-in, police said.

Daytona Beach police said dispatchers heard the pair rummaging through a vehicle parked near a nightclub and debating which items were worth taking. "You gotta break that SIM card. Take that SIM card outta there. They can trace it," one of them said during the call, according to a recording police later released.

Investigators traced the call and sent officers to the area on Glenview Avenue, where they found the suspects still with the vehicle. Police said the pair tried to get away before officers caught up with them, and both were found still carrying items believed to have been stolen.

Officers said both admitted to the burglary. Police identified the adult suspect as 19-year-old Stefanie Vargas; her companion was a 13-year-old boy, both of Palm Coast.

Vargas was charged as a principal to burglary of a conveyance, and the boy was charged with burglary of a conveyance, police spokesman Jimmie Flynt said. The boy was released to a parent, while Vargas was held on $5,000 bond.

Police said it remained unclear exactly how the call to 911 was placed, but investigators believe it happened by accident as the phone was jostled during the break-in.
