Volusia County Man Arrested in Wife's Shooting
A 71-year-old Volusia County, Florida, woman was shot once in the stomach by her husband during a late-night argument at their riverfront home outside Edgewater, and she told a 911 dispatcher the shooting was intentional, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Patricia Malewski called 911 at about 9:37 p.m. on Feb. 25, 2010, from the couple's home on Godfrey Road, in unincorporated Volusia County. "He's not shot, I am. You should see, I've got a bullet hole in my stomach," she told the dispatcher, according to the sheriff's office. Asked whether the shooting was an accident, she said, "It was on purpose!" Her husband, a 64-year-old retiree, could be heard in the background insisting it was accidental. Deputies said the couple had been drinking with dinner and got into an argument afterward. He retrieved a 9 mm handgun and waved it around to scare his wife into being quiet, but it discharged three times, sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said. One round struck her. He was detained at the home by investigators and arrested the next morning on charges of aggravated battery with domestic violence, aggravated assault and using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. He was not charged with attempted murder. A 9 mm handgun was recovered at the scene. Patricia Malewski was flown by the sheriff's Air-1 helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where she underwent surgery. Sheriff's officials said she came through the operation, was listed in intensive care and was alert and talking.
