The incident involving the Southwest Chief, a 27-car train, occurred at 2:10 a.m. CST, leading to the displacement of at least six passenger cars off the tracks. Amtrak's Cliff Black reported that injuries ranged between 15 to 30 people, although all were non-life-threatening.

Departing from Chicago on Tuesday afternoon, the train, carrying roughly 160 passengers and 15 crew members, was en route to Los Angeles when it derailed near Carbondale, Kansas, located about 18 miles south of Topeka.

Kevin Johnson, another spokesperson for Amtrak, informed CBS that the derailment affected one lounge car, a dining car, and two sleeper cars, all of which tipped onto their sides. The cause of the derailment was not immediately clear.

The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that 25 individuals sustained injuries. Rescue operations were ongoing, with emergency personnel extracting passengers from the debris nearly four hours after they were notified.
