Train Hits a Tractor-trailer, Which Burst into Flames

Surveillance video shows a train hitting a tractor-trailer, which burst into flames, at the entrance to Warner Fertilizer north of Somerset just after 3 p.m. Friday.

The explosion was caused by fuel. The truck driver, Viktor Kalchenia, 27, of Auburn, Wash., was burned; he was in stable condition at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

The driver of a tractor-trailer was distracted when he turned into the wrong entrance of a Pulaski County fertilizer plant Friday, causing a collision with a train and an explosion, according to a news release Monday form the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the Warner Fertilizer plant has two entrances, one for northbound traffic and one for southbound traffic.

Viktor Kalchenia, 27, of Auburn, Wash., was traveling north in his 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer when he missed the plant entrance, they said.

He tried to turn left into the southbound entrance while watching his tires and taking his eyes off the tracks and pulling forward, the release said.

The tractor-trailer burst into flames when it collided with a passing train, and heavy black smoke could be seen for miles.

He was treated for burns at the scene, then flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

That's an inherent problem with these types of places. They don't have signage with an industry standard and it's up to drivers in unfamiliar surrounding to "figure it out" while turning a house-sized truck around. Lack of in-cab directions was a direct contributor.
