At approximately 4:12 PM, yesterday a tanker truck exploded while refueling at the Balboa fuel storage facility in the La Boca sector, in Panama city directly beneath the bridge.

The fire quickly spread to two other tanker units, sending massive fireballs and thick smoke up the side of the bridge.

A facility employee who was unable to escape the initial blast and died. Two employees suffered second-degree burns, and two firefighters were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns.

It took approximately 50 fire crews 3 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Prosecutors have opened a formal inquiry into the cause of the explosion, and the Maritime Authority (AMP) has suspended the terminal operator's concession pending a full review.

The bridge is currently closed to all vehicular traffic. While a brief reopening occurred shortly after the fire was contained on Monday, authorities quickly reinstated a total closure to perform a pathological technical inspection due to the extreme heat the structure endured.
