Re: School Bus Struck by Racing Mustang; Crash Sent Kids to Hospital
Because the seats themselves are the restraint system. The driver needs a seatbelt so they don't fly through the windshield, but otherwise the seat backs are high enough that passengers will just get thrown into the back of the seat in front of them. The bus is high enough that most vehicles will hit the undercarriage instead of the passenger compartment, and the bus is very heavy on its own. It's also painted bright yellow for safety... Airplanes are of a similar design, when you consider that they're going hundreds of miles an hour and you only get a lap belt. Any accident bad enough to rip apart the passenger compartment, seatbelts wouldn't save you from. Also, in order to belt the passengers in, you have to beef up the frame of the seats and make them rigid, or else the belts could rip people apart if the seat deforms. Beefing up the seat frame for belts means they're no longer flimsy and cushiony enough to safely absorb passengers smacking into them, so you'd have to further restrain passengers so the don't strike the now hardened seat in front of them. |
