Romania. A severe traffic accident on the DN28 (E583) national highway claimed the life of an 82-year-old male driver.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:54 PM between the Romanian localities of Sârca and Budăi, was entirely captured by the dashcam of an oncoming commercial semi-truck.

According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the Iași County Police Inspectorate, the 82-year-old motorist was driving a blue passenger vehicle from the direction of Târgu Frumos toward Iași when the vehicle abruptly drifted to the left without braking, crossing the double continuous line directly into the path of oncoming traffic and striking a semi-truck head-on.

The truck driver attempted an emergency braking maneuver but was completely unable to avoid the violent impact.

Due to the severe force of the collision, the blue car spun across the asphalt and struck a third vehicle, driven by a 65-year-old man, which was traveling directly behind the semi-truck.

Emergency response units, including heavy extrication teams from ISU Iași and specialized medical crews from the SMURD mobile emergency service, were deployed to the site.

The elderly driver, 82, was trapped inside the crushed frame of his vehicle. Although medical staff managed to extricate him and immediately initiated resuscitation maneuvers, his injuries were too severe and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman sitting in the front passenger seat survived the catastrophic impact. Extrication teams rescued her, and she was rushed to a hospital in Iași with multiple serious injuries.

Both the truck driver and the 65-year-old operator of the third vehicle escaped without physical injuries.

They were tested at the scene for alcohol consumption, and both breathalyzer tests returned negative results.

Traffic investigators are currently looking into the medical history and condition of the deceased octogenarian at the exact moment of the crash.

Based on initial evidence, authorities suspect that the driver either fell asleep at the wheel or suffered a sudden medical emergency (such as a heart attack or stroke), causing him to completely lose control of the steering wheel.

A criminal case for negligent homicide has been formally opened to archive the technical and forensic findings of the collision.

At the earliest stage of an accident, a criminal file is opened in rem, meaning the authorities are investigating the event itself and not a specific person.

Their law requires a formal criminal investigationg to deploy forensic experts, order autopsies, examine dashcam footage and measure braking distances etc.

If the deceased guy was 100% at fault, the prosecutor will formally close the case and others involved are legally cleared of wrongdoing.
