The rest of the story may well have been casualities wherever that truck ended up. But shit, brakes don't enter into this equation. If you think so, turn in your license and stay the hell off the road.

Brake hard and stay in a straight line. The truck would probably still have taken out the bike, but he wouldn't have been bouncing around both sides of the road like he was in a pinball machine.

If the driver had stayed in a straight line without braking, the bike and its riders would most likely have ended up underneath of the truck and he would have lost control just the same.

You're absolutely right about not putting yourself or others in danger, and if running them over is what it takes, then so be it.
