Mitsubishi Outlander and Cab Crash Kills 12 Year Old Boy

Amar Atwal, 12, was not wearing a seatbelt when a taxi driver ploughed into him.

He was sitting in the backseat and was thrown from the vehicle by the force.

Schoolboy Amar died two days later in hospital after suffering fatal injuries.

Nadeem Hussain, 35, ignored 'Give Way' signs and was jailed for six years in December after a jury found him guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

The grieving mother of a 12-year-old schoolboy who was killed by a speeding taxi driver has released harrowing footage of the fatal crash.

Devastated Sukhi Atwal will join West Midlands Police officers this morning for a week long awareness campaign, highlighting the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt following the death of her son.

Her son Amar, 12, was not wearing a seatbelt when the Mitsubishi Outlander he was in was hit by a taxi in Hollyhedge Road, West Bromwich.

He was jailed for 6 years in December after a jury found him guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

'We will never get over the loss of Amar,' said devastated Sukhi, from Great Barr. 'He was such a bright, intelligent, fun-loving boy.

'He was an innocent victim of the crash, and there is now a huge hole which can never be filled in our lives.

'Wearing a seatbelt could have saved his life. At the very least, it would have given him a better chance of survival.

'We can never get Amar back, but I just hope by encouraging both young and old to try to be as safe as possible, they won't have to go through the heartbreak we have.'

Sukhi will join officers at a roadside checkpoint today urging motorists to make sure all passengers wear seatbelts and that youngsters are safely strapped in child car seats.

West Midlands Police Special Constable Clive Broadhurst has produced a video featuring images of Amar and Sukhi that will be used during school talks.

'I regularly go around schools to give road safety advice and urge pupils to be strapped in,' he said. 'It can prevent serious injuries, or even save your life.

'It has been the law for more than 30 years to wear a seatbelt. It only takes a few seconds to buckle up, but it is surprising the amount of people who still don't.

'It is very brave of Sukhi to share her experience and hopefully it will hit home how wearing a seatbelt can make a difference. She doesn't want any other family to suffer the heartbreak she has had to endure.'

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group will be monitoring motorways and other routes across the Midlands as part of the week-long campaign. Drivers who are pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt face a £100 fine.

Inspector Sion Hathaway said: 'We really can't stress enough the importance of wearing a seatbelt. Not only do you risk a fine if caught not using one, but they can also prove a life-saver.'

Birmingham Crown Court heard in December how Amar had kissed his mother, telling her he loved her, just hours before the crash that claimed his life.

In a victim impact statement, his mum also revealed that the schoolboy's kidneys, heart, liver and pancreas had been donated to help save five lives.

'I am really proud that other lives had been saved by my son,' she said.

The jury was shown the CCTV footage of the moment Hussain's Vauxhall Astra came across the junction before hitting the Mitsubishi.

Hussain smashed into the side of the car carrying Amar and his relatives, which flipped onto its roof and smashed into a tree.

The court heard that Amar's 12-year-old cousin suffered multiple leg fractures in the crash, and may now be left with one leg shorter than the other.

The Mitsubishi driver also suffered a brain injury, which has left her with significantly restricted eye movement and profound psychological impairment.
