At Least 26 Killed when Bus Plunges into River from Ferry Pontoon
Bangladesh. The death toll at a ferry terminal has risen to at least 26 people. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon, March 25, when a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River. A Dhaka-bound Souhardo Paribahan bus was waiting to board a ferry at Ghat No.3. when a smaller utility ferry named Hasna Hena struck the terminal pontoon with significant force. The impact caused the bus driver to lose control, sending the vehicle off the pontoon and into the river, where it sank to a depth of roughly 30 to 80 feet. The bus was carrying approximately 40 to 50 passengers returning to the capital after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. Among the confirmed dead are at least 11 women and 5 children. While many bodies have been recovered and handed over to families, some passengers reportedly remain missing, and search operations have been hampered by heavy rain and strong currents. The government has formed a high-level investigation committee to determine the exact cause and hold responsible parties accountable. |
