The fact that it was only minor injuries strongly suggests the driver was unaware of what was happening. Drivers that are aware tend to tense up before an impact which often increases the level of injury, which is why intoxicated drivers quite regularly walk away from collisions that kill sober drivers. Whether this driver was drunk, on drugs or asleep at the wheel I have no idea, but they were damn lucky. The fact that the toll booths appeared to have collapsible attenuators on the ends of the walls helped a hell of a lot too, it that had just been concrete walls the car may well have been split apart...
