Re: Going Up! Man N Elevator Breaks Back

laying on the floor would have help him somehow??
likely- the spine,as you know, is a vertical column of stacked bone cylinders, each separated by a gel disc, and encasing highly critical electronic conduit, also called "the spinal cord", and supporting the considerable weight of the head, torso, and arms. if the body gets compressed along the longitudinal axis(as if you were standing in an elevator that suddenly stops in either direction), the discs can easily rupture and the spine can easily snap. so for the spine's safety, it is better to be laying down, distributing the impact load laterally through the body instead of vertically... exactly why astronauts are seated with their spines lateral to the rocket's acceleration.

i think it's ascend/descent control gear failed and opened up leaving the cab moving by its rapidly falling counterweights only. unlucky rider.

Re: Going Up! Man N Elevator Breaks Back

while it's true that this is one of those slight wrong place wong time situations, I'd hardly call him unlucky. This guy traveled vertically 31 floors in 15 seconds.

Each floor being between 10-12 feet in height depending on architecture, and structural support design. That's not including the space between floors. That's a pretty hefty distance to cover in 15 seconds.

to top it off the elevator came to a sudden stop when it hit the ceiling. With him being a detached to the elevator, he also did not stop until HE hit the ceiling. Yet, he survived. He'll most likely have back problem for the remainder of his life, but he's alive.

Chances are he was standing in a good spot in the elevator. If he had been standing anywhere else, he probably wouldn't have survived, but who knows.
