Re: Corvette C8 Runs Red Light, Collides with Mercedes SUV and Clips Pedestrian
The Corvette, driven by 27-year-old Eric Torres (who had a suspended license), was traveling eastbound at high speed, struck the Mercedes, continued to hit a 34-year-old pedestrian on the sidewalk, and then collided with a building. The impact sent the Mercedes airborne into parked vehicles (incl. a moped), trapping its occupants until a building superintendent broke the sunroof to free them. The Mercedes driver fled on foot. All 3 hospitalized individuals (Torres, his passenger and the pedestrian, who suffered a broken leg) were reported in stable condition at Harlem Hospital. Torres was later arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Police are investigating possible drag racing. Witness accounts, including those amplified in the original post, indicate the Corvette had been performing doughnuts and driving recklessly in the area for over an hour beforehand. Neighbors described speeding and racing through this intersection as a recurring local problem, expressing frustration over limited enforcement and calling for more cameras or stronger measures. This fits a longer pattern in Inwood and nearby Upper Manhattan: the area around Sherman Avenue (including stretches near 204th–207th Streets) has drawn repeated complaints about drag racing, loud engines, and reckless driving dating back years, incl. a notable surge during the pandemic and in the wake of prior high-speed chases. Broader context shows this is not isolated. Speeding remains a leading factor in New York City traffic fatalities (accounting for more than 25% in recent Vision Zero data), with studies indicating pedestrian death risk roughly doubles with every 10 mph increase in impact speed. Street racing, car meets, and “takeovers” continue to prompt NYPD operations that result in vehicle seizures and summonses across the city. Yet, enforcement challenges persist, especially with drivers operating under suspended licenses or in high-performance vehicles on ordinary residential streets. The survival of everyone involved is unusual given the violence of the impacts captured on multiple surveillance cameras (the pedestrian was thrown into the air and vehicles were heavily mangled). Modern vehicle safety systems and pure chance likely played roles, but the near-misses underscore how quickly public roads can become lethal when treated as personal racetracks. |

Re: Corvette C8 Runs Red Light, Collides with Mercedes SUV and Clips Pedestrian
Those cars have almost 600 HP stock. All it takes is touching the gas pedal and vroom vroom it’s off to the races. Idiots who don’t know how to handle power. Go take a driving class and learn to drive before heading to the races. |
