Re: Bus Full Of Passengers Goes Over A Cliff

A bus carrying tourists from South Korea veered off a highway and fell part way down a cliff along Taiwan's eastern coast, injuring 15 people on board.

The bus's engine failed as it was travelling up a steep mountainous road in Taroko National Park in Hualian County.

The 13 South Korean tourists, a tour guide and local driver, were taken to hospital for treatment. Two had serious but non-life threatening injuries, the Associated Press reports.
There's a tiny clip of the aftermath here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-18002333

you are correct, the reporter narrating on the video on the bbc link says the bus was rolling down the hill backwards

Re: Bus Full Of Passengers Goes Over A Cliff

Don't they have these things called brakes? Or a handbrake?

Once the engine fails the brakes would be useless, and I guess you don't drive, but a hand brake doesn't stop you if you're moving, much less a laden bus.

I guess buses are different to cars then, since a handbrake sure as hell can stop a car even with the engine off. And there's always some residual pressure in hydraulic brakes after the power cuts, usually enough to slow a vehicle such that the handbrake can stop it altogether. But no, I've never driven a bus.

A handbrake wont stop a moving car, the engine has more than enough power to force past the energy that a handbrake puts onto the wheels. If you arent moving or are going slow it would work, but if you slam on your handbreak whilst driving fast you'll slow down then fuck up your brakes and keep moving.

Trust me ive done it hah
