You can tell there was a depression where it collapsed by the way the nose of both vehicles dropped & then came back up as they drove onto that spot. I like the way that the vehicles in back of them started hesitantly backing up afterwards & then decided to get the hell away from the pit. |

The one person who was turning right wasn’t sure what to do and backed out of their turn.   I laughed a little when opposing traffic just continued across the intersection like nothing happened.  |

There is a conflicting report between city officials and the utility provider regarding the primary cause. City Engineer Austin Rowser stated it is evident that a pressurized water source, likely a broken water main, has been eroding the soil beneath the road for some time, scouring it into the storm sewer. The Metropolitan Utilities District suggests a sewer failure may be the culprit instead. They noted that when the cars fell, a cloud of dry dust emerged rather than water, suggesting the water main break may have been a result of the collapse rather than its cause.
