15 Women Dead, 88 Injured when Train Smashes into Other Train
West Java, Yesterday around 8 pm a green electric taxi stalled at an unmarked railroad crossing on Ampera Road got struck by a Jakarta-bound commuter train and dragged it 100 meters. The taxi driver escaped unharmed, but the incident forced rail authorities to halt traffic. Due to the taxi accident, a second commuter train heading toward Cikarang was ordered to stop and remain at the railway station but at 20:52 pm a long-distance express traveling at high speed toward Surabaya, failed to stop and slammed into the rear of the stationary commuter train at the railway station. The express train's locomotive became deeply embedded in the commuter train's final carriage—a women-only coach. Some people were recording with their cell-phone at that time. All 15 confirmed fatalities were adult women who were traveling in the rear-most carriage. Endang Kuswati (41) is textile worker who was trapped for over 8 hours. She managed to call her family while pinned under debris and was finally rescued around 7:00 AM the next morning with severe swelling. Sausan Sarifah (29) who was a passenger who survived with a broken arm and a deep thigh cut. She described the impact as happening in a split second and feared for her life as passengers were crushed together. Fira (27) is undergoing medical triage at the Hospital. All 240 passengers on the long-distance train survived without injury. The National Transportation Safety Committee is investigating whether a signaling error or human negligence caused the express train to miss a stop signal. President Prabowo Subianto visited survivors and announced a 4 trillion rupiah ($231 million) plan to eliminate 1,800 level crossings in Java by building flyovers and underpasses. The taxi operator is cooperating with police as they examine why the electric vehicle's locking mechanism reportedly prevented it from being pushed off the tracks. |
